Being a parent, one of your topmost priorities should be the nutrition of your child. Proper nutrition is very important not just to children but also to everybody else. Nutrition is the factor that determines whether a person is healthy or not. A poor nutritional intake may render a person to become unhealthy or also known as malnourish. In addition, wrong nutritional intake may also, in any case, make a person weak in terms of health.
Nutrition and health is always related with the word food. In simple analogy, food is where one gets nutrients and nutrients can give him a healthy body. When one thinks of having a good health, he must always consider eating right and good food that may give him the proper nutrition he needs.
Since nutrition is viewed by everybody as an important aspect not to be taken for granted, the government and other concerned organization made a move in fighting hunger and delivering right and good food to every household in the country.
On the part of the government, they have made laws pertaining to the proper nutrition distribution throughout the country. One example of the laws is the Child Nutrition Act. The origin of the Child Nutrition Act can be traced from the Child Nutrition Act of 1966. From that year to date, there had been many revisions and amendments to the act. The amendments may be because of the reality that the country is experiencing in this milieu that is very different decades ago.
One example of the problems the country has experienced on malnutrition is obesity. During the 1980’s, obesity was doubled in children aged 12 and lower and was tripled on teens. Obesity is caused by abnormal calorie and carbohydrate intake. When a person is obese, he is expected to weigh more than the normal weight for a given height and is characterized by inflated body figure. Child Nutrition Acts regulates the distribution of food and nutrition to attain a balance and healthy lives among children.
Child Nutrition Act is also the law that authorizes the use of the federal or in some cases the state fund for feeding program. Child Nutrition Act has a provision in it that gives mandate to the agency concerned in monitoring the nutritional intake of the children across the country. It also directs the Secretary of the USDA to make a legislation that will help distribute good foods in the schools.
There are many laws enacted in the US Senate and Congress pertaining to child nutrition. There are those that give authority to school to have feeding programs. One of the programs that supports child nutrition act is the Free Lunch Meal for School Children. There are also programs that are community based. Meaning, the government makes an outreach programs aiming to feed children. Child Nutrition Acts also gives power to let the federal and states fund be used for feeding children and adults whenever a natural calamity affects the country. There had been many cases that funds were used for this reason.
Child Nutrition Act is never scraped out of the law. The right for the child to eat a healthy food must be a governments concern. Acts such as this can be amended but it can never be deleted. This year, Child Nutrition Act was renamed by the Congress. The title “Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act of 2006” is being enacted in the Congress. The amendment was limited only to some definition clarification. It also strengthens the Child Nutrition Act of the country.
